Sweetbay Hacker
SCARBOROUGH, ME: Hannaford, the parent company of the Sweetbay supermarket chain, says over four
million of their customers' credit and debit card numbers were exposed to a hacker in late February.
The company says the data was grabbed during the card authorization transmission process.
They say they are aware of about 1,800 cases of fraud related to the data intrusion and about 4.2 million unique
account numbers were exposed.
Hannaford says no personal information - such as names or addresses - was accessed by
the hacker.
They say they are cooperating with credit and debit card issuers to make sure affected customers are protected.
Anyone who has shopped at 165 of the company's stores in the Northeast, 106 Sweetbay stores in Florida and a smaller
number of independent grocers that sell Hannaford products is asked to carefully review their credit and debit card
statements for peculiar activity.
You can also call Hannaford's customer assistance line at (866) 591-4580 with any questions or to let the company
know your information has been stolen.
They're still trying to get an accurate count of the number of customers
affected.
The company adds they will nevercall a customer asking for credit card information.
They fear scammers may try to use
the data breach as a tool to victimize even more people.
